Student Schedule
A Typical Day at Mill Falls:
Mill Falls School Hours:
7-8:15am: Before Care Program (enrollment required, see above)
8:15am: Drop Off begins
8:30am: Official Start of the School Day
11:30am-1pm: Lunch / Recess for Kinder, Lower & Upper Elementary classes
3:00pm: Official End of the School Day
3:00-4:00pm: After School Clubs/Activities (enrollment required)
Basic details about the daily schedule at Mill Falls:
Lower & Upper Elementary, 6.5 hour day
Each of our Lower and Upper Elementary classrooms has an extended morning work period where children are involved in large, small, and individual lessons throughout all core curricular areas. During this period, children are introduced to new concepts as well as working on/practicing concepts previously introduced. This includes time for students to have snack and morning meeting.
Following the morning work period, the students have lunch and a midday recess (the order is determined by the overall school schedule). That break time is followed by another afternoon work cycle. Our Lower Elementary students participate in our Integrated Arts Program in the afternoons; our Upper Elementary students have Integrated Arts in the mornings. Our Integrated Arts Program consists of music, art, fitness, technology, and combined cultural arts.
Kindergarten, 6.5 hour day
After an exercise period (outdoors as weather allows), the Kindergarten students begin the day with morning meeting, followed by their morning work cycle, similar to that of the elementary students (noted above). Students have the opportunity to have snack during morning, and break for recess and lunch midday. That break time is followed by another afternoon work period. Our Kinder students participate in our Integrated Arts Program daily which includes music, art and fitness.
*A more specific daily schedule will be included in your classroom/orientation packet.
Student Supplies
What Every Student Needs:
Each summer, our classroom teachers send out Classroom Welcome Packets which includes a letter from the classroom teachers and details about what they would like their students to bring to school on the first day. Here is some additional information for parents and students to consider in preparation for the start of school:
Backpacks: Every child needs a backpack to carry snacks, lunch, water bottle, and school communications to and from school. Backpacks should be able to be easily worn on the child’s back; suitcase style backpacks with wheels are not permitted as they do not fit in our cubbies.
Lunch Box: Mill Falls students eat lunch with their classmates and teachers in their classrooms; there is not a cafeteria at the school location. When sending in lunch, be sure to include all needed utensils and napkins.
Water Bottle: Each student is expected to bring a reusable water bottle with them to school daily.
Snacks: Students are expected to bring a nutritious snack to school each day. Please remember children need healthy meals and snacks to learn!
Indoor Slippers or Shoes: Students are required to bring in a pair of shoes or slippers with soles, that they wear only in the classrooms. The simpler design the better (i.e. no flashing lights, Disney or superhero characters, etc). These indoor shoesslippers are left at school and used daily. Classrooms have space for storing outdoor shoes during the school day.
Dress Code Basics: Students are expected to come to school in comfortable clothing that is respectful and appropriate for learning. Keep in mind that Montessori students often work on mats that are on the floor. Please also note, our students are indoors and outdoors on most days, and so we ask that you please send them to school with weather appropriate clothing and shoes (no flip flops, please).
When selecting clothes, bags and other items your child will use at school, we respectfully ask that you honor the principles of Montessori by choosing simple, comfortable items which are free of commercialism or distracting media messages or slogans (including Disney or other characters, superheroes, movies, television shows, video games, etc. whenever possible).
Please label all of your child’s personal items. Thank you!
The Family Handbook provides more detailed information on a wide variety of topics, such as the bus code of conduct, the special way that Montessori education honors a child’s birthday, and much more!
Volunteer Opportunities
The Mill Falls Team welcomes active and visible parent and community member involvement in the life of the school. Voluntarism enriches the school learning environment for our children and the lives of those donating their time.
To help us learn more about your strengths and interests, please complete the Count Me In Form.
All adult volunteers are required to review the Volunteer Handbook, complete the attached forms and return those forms to the school Office.
Our Volunteers work under the direction of the school leadership and staff to support our goals of meeting the educational needs of the children and the teaching staff. The following committees have been established to facilitate communication and organization between the school administration, staff and volunteers:
Hospitality Committee
The goal of the Hospitality Committee is to give back to our school and fantastic staff with activities such as providing lunches on staff professional learning days and an occasional breakfast, organizing Teacher Appreciation Week, as well as other surprise opportunities. The Committee also seeks to create a welcoming atmosphere for all who enter our building. This can be achieved by supporting events that welcome friends, families and guests, showcasing student artwork, adding fresh florals to areas of the building or offering any other support needed to foster the Montessori spirit. If any of these things are of interest to you or you have new ideas, please consider joining this Committee or lending a hand when they ask for help!
Family Events Committee
This committee works with the school’s administrative staff to organize individual events in the areas of social events (“friendraisers”) and community service events. The Committee’s work aims to connect Mill Falls families together and with the school by providing programs that support the learning in the school day and allow for families to be part of the school community. Activities include the Annual Fun Run/5K, Pancake Breakfast, Take a Hike Day, as well as our planned Book Fairs, Paint Nights, Spaghetti Dinner, and more! There are opportunities for helping to plan events as well as contributing a few hours on the day of events or donating necessary event supplies. Time needed varies from a few a hours to ongoing weekly or monthly commitment, during the school day or night/weekends depending on the event.
Teacher/Staff Support Committee
This Committee is designed to complete tasks that support instruction including lamination, classroom material preparation, mailings, etc. Tasks will be driven by the needs of our teaching staff and front office. If you enjoy this type of work, and would like to lend a hand, please let Jen know by email at Office@MillFalls.org. If you are interested in co-chairing this Committee, please let her know!
New Parent/Guardian Ambassador Committee
This Committee works with the school’s administrative staff as a resource to new Mill Falls Families. If you are interested in this kind of volunteer opportunity, please reach out to Meryl Levin at meryl.levin@millfalls.org.
